Art Prints

This page contains a selection of limited edition prints that are in stock and ready to ship. Many of Robert's artworks are digital, in which case the full edition is not printed up front, allowing them to be printed at different sizes and on different types of paper. "Fractal Tessellation of Spirals"
$95.00
*** Sold ***
"Fractal Tessellation of Spirals" is based on a fractal tessellation of kite-shaped tiles discovered by Dr. Fathauer some ten years earlier. All of the spirals in the print have the same shape (more precisely, they are all similar in the Euclidean plane). Digital print created in 2011. For a closer look at the print, please click here. Archival print on heavy watercolor paper, no. 5/50. Image size 15" x 15".

"Fractal Tree No. 5"
$95.00
"Fractal Tree No. 5" is a digital artwork constructed by graphically iterating a photographic building block created from photographs of the base of a rose bush. The rugged appearance of the thorny stalks is juxtaposed with the light feathery appearance of the overall fractal. Created in 2007. For a closer look at the print, please click here. Archival print on heavy watercolor paper, no. 9/50. Image size 14" x 20".

"Twice Iterated Knot No. 1" Framed
$190.00
The starting point for this knot is a nine-crossing knot that has been carefully arranged to allow seamless iteration. Four regions of this starting knot are replaced with a scaled-down copy of the full starting knot, incorporated in such a way that the iterated knot is still unicursal. These same four regions are then replaced with a scaled-down copy of the iterated knot, resulting in a complex knot possessing self similarity. "Twice Iterated Knot No. 1" is a limited edition of 50 digital prints created in 2008. Dimensions 21" x17" including natural maple frame.

"Fractal Tree No. 13"
$95.00
"Fractal Tree No. 13" is a digital artwork constructed by graphically iterating a photographic building block created from photographs of some twigs from a palo verde tree. Created in 2010. For a closer look at the print, please click here. Archival print on heavy watercolor paper, no. 5/50. Image size 15" x 18".

"Fractal Tree No. 7", Framed
$190.00
This is a digital artwork constructed by graphically iterating a photographic building block created from photographs of the skeleton of a cholla cactus. "Fractal Tree No. 7" is a limited edition of 50 prints, completed in 2009. Dimensions 23" x 21" including frame.

"Spiraling Flowers"
$95.00
Tessellated flowers and leaves are arranged in a pattern with eight-fold rotational symmetry (four-fold if color is considered). Selective coloring of the outer and inner portions of the flowers brings out sets of counter-rotating spirals. The design is a fractal with a lone singular point at the center, since zooming in repeatedly about the center reveals similar structure at any magnification. Digital print created in 2011. For a closer look at the print, please click here. Archival print on heavy watercolor paper, no. 5/50. Image size 16" x 16".

"Scorpion, Diamondback, and Phoenix"
$60.00
This tessellation is based on the famous non-repeating Penrose tiles. Silkscreen print, hand printed and signed by the artist in 1993. The diamondback rattlesnake and scorpion tiles together are formed from the Penrose kite, while the Phoenix-bird is formed from the Penrose dart. For a closer look at the print, please click here. Print no. 40/48. Image size of 12" x 12"; paper size of 19" x 18". 1993. Unframed.

"Sky and Water in the Digital Age", Framed
$190.00
"Sky and Water", in which birds and fish meet in a tessellation at the horizon line between the sky and the sea, is one of M.C. Escher's best-known prints. "Sky and Water in the Digital Age" pays homage to Escher's print and plays with the fact that the motifs in Robert Fathauer's tessellations are in reality just collections of pixels. In this case, the blurring of the line between sky and water is accomplished by increasing the pixel size as the horizon is approached. "Sky and Water in the Digital Age" is a limited edition of 50 prints executed in 2005; the image size is 11" x 11"; framed size is 22" x 22".

"Three Fishes", Framed
$125.00
"Three Fishes " is a limited edition screen print made in 1994. The motif bears a resemblance to one of Escher's tessellation designs, but the symmetry of the design is quite different. Escher's design has four-fold rotational symmetry about the tail and the top fin, with two-fold rotational symmetry about the jaw. "Three Fishes", on the other hand, has three-fold rotational symmetry about the tail, top fin, and mouth. The design was hand printed as an edition of 65 prints, with three different color combinations. Framed in oak, the dimensions including frame are 16" x 16"
