Bound Tori
This mixed-media piece is based on the Hopf link, a simply joined pair of rings. The hand-built ceramic portions are the rings, thickened from the ideal lines to form tori. The associated Seifert surface is formed by bamboo sticks held in place by leather cord. The holes for the cord prescribe a full revolution around the thickness of the ring as they revolve around the ring diameter. This piece measures approximately 13 inches in the long direction.
